Year 2a

Welcome to Year 2a

Welcome to the Summer term in 2A.

 

This term we will be learning about lots of different exciting things in all our subjects.

 

English

This term we will be using the books 'The Three Little Pigs' and the 'True story of the three pigs'  We will be looking at how the stories are the same and different. Writing characters descriptions from each character's point of view, writing house adverts to sell each of the pig's houses. We will also be writing letters to the wolf from the pig's parents and then replying as if we were the wolf.  Finally we will be writing our own alternative version of the story.

 

In grammar, we will be looking at different types of punctuation including apostrophes for possession and the contracted form of a word, commas in lists. We will be writing words in past and present tense and look at varying the openings of our sentences.

 

Maths

We will be covering the topics of Shape and Position and Direction this term

In Shape we will be:

identifying and describing the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line
identifying and describing the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces.
 
In Position and Direction we will be:
Ordering and arranging combinations of mathematical objects in patterns and sequences
Distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anticlockwise).
 

We will also continue to revise our arithmetic methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in preparation for the step up to 3 digit numbers in Year 3.

Science

In Science this term we will be focusing on Living things and their habitats.  We will be:

Exploring and comparing the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive.
Identifying that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited.
Describing how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different animals and plants, and how they depend on each other.
identifying and naming a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including microhabitats.
describing how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain.
 
History

We will be ‘blasting off’ into Space for our new history topic. Our topic is entitled ‘Man’s First Moon Landing’. Some of the questions we will be  investigating are: Has man ever been to the Moon and how can we know for sure? Why did the astronauts risk their lives to go to the Moon? How were the spacemen able to get there and back safely? Does everyone agree that we should continue to send men to the Moon?

 

PSHE

This term we will be studying our ‘Changing me’ topic. We will learn how we have changed from being a baby and how we will change further as we get older. We will be using the correct terminology for the different parts of our bodies and that some parts of our bodies are private.

 

 

DT

During the week commencing 14th June , we have our DT project which is based on bikes - design, build and evaluate.

During the week we will be:
1 evaluating bikes and parts which are needed;
2 designing a bike for a favourite character;
3 designing a bike accessory;
4 Designing, making and evaluating a bike seat for a teddy to attach to a bike.

 

 

RE

The question we will be investigating this term is ‘What do Muslims believe?’ The children will reflect upon and conduct an enquiry into what it means to be a Muslim. They will
1. develop a knowledge and understanding of the importance of God in Islam.
2. enquire into and learn about the religion of Islam and the life of a Muslim believer.
3. We will enable pupils to ask questions about the beliefs and practices of Islam.
4. To consider the importance of the 99 names given to Allah and how these reflect the beliefs about God in Islam.
5. To reflect on some of the qualities of God in Islam.
6. To enable pupils to discover why there are no images of Allah.

 

Music

We will continue our work using Charanga and the unit is called Reflect, rewind and  Replay.

 

PE

This half term, the focus in PE will be Athletics and will focus on:

  • understanding different running speeds 
  • throwing with coordination and force 
  • throwing with control and accuracy
